Before you choose a zodiac tattoo, there is one thing worth knowing that catches a surprising number of people out in India: you may have two different signs.

Western astrology and Vedic astrology use different systems, and because of a slow shift in the earth’s axis they are currently offset by roughly 23 degrees — about three weeks. So someone born in late March might be Aries by the Western calendar and Meena, Pisces, by their Hindu janam patri. Neither is wrong. They are answering slightly different questions. But finding out afterwards that your family’s astrologer would have given you a different sign is not a discovery you want to make with the tattoo already healed.

Western sign or Vedic rashi?

Western (tropical) astrology fixes the signs to the seasons. This is the system behind every horoscope app and magazine column, and the one most people mean when they say “I’m a Leo”.

Vedic (sidereal) astrology, the basis of the Hindu rashi in your janam patri, fixes signs to the actual positions of the constellations. Because the earth’s axis drifts, the two systems have gradually separated. If your birthday falls near the boundary between two signs, they will often disagree.

The twelve rashis, for reference: Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius), Meena (Pisces).

Our advice is simple and takes ten minutes: check both before you book. If they agree, nothing to think about. If they disagree, decide which system means more to you rather than discovering the conflict later. Plenty of people choose the rashi precisely because it is the one their family uses.

The three ways to draw a zodiac tattoo

Almost every zodiac tattoo is one of these three, and they age very differently.

1. The glyph

The symbol itself — ♌ for Leo, ♏ for Scorpio, ♓ for Pisces. Minimal, instantly recognisable to anyone who knows it, and completely private to anyone who does not.

Ages best of the three. Glyphs are clean strokes with open space and no fine internal detail, which is exactly what survives as ink settles over decades. If you want something small that will still look right in twenty years, this is the option.

2. The constellation

The actual star pattern — dots for stars, fine lines connecting them. Currently the most requested version, and genuinely beautiful.

This is the one to size carefully. Dots spread in skin exactly like lines do. A very small dot joined by a hairline connector will merge into a slightly thicker mark over the years, and once several of them do, the constellation stops reading as a constellation. Slightly larger dots with slightly more space between them solve it completely — and cost you nothing except a centimetre or two.

3. The illustrated sign

The creature or figure — a lion for Leo, a scorpion for Scorpio, the water-bearer for Aquarius, a crab for Cancer. Can be fine-line, ornamental, or full black and grey realism.

Many of the best zodiac pieces combine two: a glyph inside a mandala, a constellation behind an illustrated figure, or the rashi name in Devanagari beside the symbol.

Design directions that work

Glyph in a circle or mandala. The symbol framed by ornamental geometry. Balanced, meaningful, and it scales up or down well. See our mandala tattoo guide.
Constellation with a moon phase. Star pattern paired with a crescent. One of the most popular combinations, especially on the spine and forearm.
Two signs together. Yours and a partner’s, a child’s, or a parent’s — often as two constellations sharing a composition.
Element-based design. Fire, earth, air or water rendered around the sign — flame for Leo, waves for Pisces, mountains for Taurus.

Where zodiac tattoos sit best

Inner forearm. The best all-round placement. Flat, low friction, ages well, and there is room for a constellation to be sized properly.
Spine. Excellent for a vertical constellation or a row of moon phases. Flat, protected from sun, and the symmetry suits it. Tender to sit.
Collarbone. Elegant for a small glyph or a short constellation following the bone.
Upper arm and shoulder. Comfortable, easy to cover, and roomy enough for an illustrated sign.
Behind the ear or nape. Discreet, best for a simple glyph only.
Ribcage. Dramatic for a larger illustrated piece, though sharper to sit.
Wrist and ankle. Popular, but high friction and high sun. Keep these simple — a glyph rather than a delicate constellation.

Does it hurt?

The same as any tattoo of that size in that place. Outer forearm, upper arm and thigh are the most comfortable. Spine, ribs, collarbone, ankle and inner wrist are sharper. A glyph or small constellation is a short session; a full illustrated sign in black and grey realism is a long one and may run across sittings.

Healing and aftercare, with a Gurgaon twist

Keep the initial wrap on for as long as your artist advises, then wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free soap.
Pat dry, never rub. Fine dots and thin connectors lose pigment easily when rubbed fresh.
Apply a thin layer of the recommended balm. Thin is the word.
Do not pick or scratch. On a constellation, losing one dot changes the pattern.
No swimming, saunas, gym sweat or soaking for the first two to three weeks.
Keep it moisturised well past the peeling stage.

One honest thought before you book

Zodiac tattoos are one of the few designs where people occasionally change their mind about the meaning rather than the artwork. Interest in astrology can shift over a lifetime in a way that, say, a parent’s name does not.

That is not a reason to avoid one — plenty of people wear theirs happily for forty years. It is a reason to lean towards versions that stand on their own as artwork: an illustrated lion is a beautiful lion regardless of what you believe about Leos, and a constellation is a beautiful star map regardless. Why the artist matters

Zodiac work is deceptively demanding because so much of it is minimal. A glyph is a handful of strokes, and every irregularity in those strokes is visible because there is nothing else on the skin. A constellation is a set of dots that must be spaced accurately — get the proportions wrong and it is no longer your constellation, it is a scatter of dots.
