Where it came from

The symbol was popularised by Project Semicolon, started in 2013 by Amy Bleuel in memory of her father, whom she lost to suicide. The idea spread quickly, and the mark became a shared symbol for people affected by suicide, depression, self-harm and addiction — those who have struggled themselves, and those who have lost someone.

It is worn by survivors, by people still in the middle of it, by families, and by people who work in mental health. There is no test to pass and no story you owe anyone. If it means something to you, it is yours to wear.

What people wear it for

Surviving a suicide attempt or the thought of one. The original meaning — the sentence could have ended, and it did not.
Living with depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. A marker of continuing.
Recovery from self-harm. Often placed deliberately on the wrist or forearm.
Recovery from addiction. Sometimes with a sobriety date.
Remembering someone lost to suicide. Frequently with their initials or a date.
Solidarity. Worn by parents, siblings, partners and friends of someone struggling.

The technical thing that matters — the gap

This is the part nobody warns you about, and it is genuinely important on this specific design.

A semicolon is two marks with a gap between them — a dot above, a comma below. That gap is the whole character. And small, tight gaps are exactly what closes first as ink naturally settles into skin over the years.

If the semicolon is tattooed very small, the dot and the comma merge, and you are left with a short vertical dash. It stops being a semicolon. We have been asked to fix this more than once.

Do not go tiny. This is the most common request and the one we most often talk people out of. A little larger costs nothing and lasts.
Keep the gap generous. Slightly more space between the dot and the comma than looks “correct” on paper. Skin is not paper.
Confident stroke weight, not hairline. A hairline semicolon softens fastest.
Solid dot, clean comma. Both marks packed properly rather than lightly.

Where to place it

Inner wrist. The most common, and often chosen deliberately — it is where scars frequently are, and covering or sitting beside them is part of the meaning for many people. It is also the highest-friction and highest-sun spot, so keep it slightly larger than feels necessary. See our wrist tattoo guide.
Inner forearm. Our usual recommendation. Flat, low friction, ages well, and you can see it yourself — which matters for this tattoo.
Behind the ear. Discreet, easy to hide under hair.
Collarbone. Elegant, and easy to cover or show.
Ankle. Understated. Bony and higher friction.

Practical things

Does it hurt? Barely. Most semicolon tattoos are a few minutes of work. The inner wrist and ankle are sharper than the forearm because the bone is close, but every version of this is a short session. Our tattoo pain chart covers placement pain generally.

Healing. Keep the wrap on as advised, wash gently with lukewarm water and mild fragrance-free soap, pat dry, thin layer of balm, do not pick, and no swimming or heavy sweating for two to three weeks.
