Shoulder blade pair. Two smaller wings sitting on the upper back only. Far more practical for most people and still reads beautifully.
Single wing. One wing on one shoulder blade or down one arm. Often chosen when the other half belongs to someone else — a sibling or partner with the mirror piece.

The sizing conversation, honestly

This is the part that decides whether you are happy in fifteen years.

Feathers work through overlap. Each layer needs a visible edge and a visible gap from the layer beneath it. Ink spreads slightly in living skin over the years, and when it does, those gaps between feather layers are the first thing to close. Once two layers merge, they never separate again.

Detailed feathered wings need real estate. The back, the full shoulder blade, the chest, or a substantial section of arm. This is not a studio upselling you — it is the size at which the design survives.
Small wings must be simplified, not shrunk. A small wing that is going to last is drawn as a clean shape with a handful of deliberate feather strokes and generous space between them. It should not be a miniature copy of a detailed reference.

Beware the “small but detailed” request. It is the single most common way this design goes wrong. If you want detail, you need size. If you want small, you need simplification. You cannot have both, and any artist who says otherwise is telling you what you want to hear.

If this is a memorial piece

A large share of angel wings tattoos are for someone who has died. Two honest things.

There is no rush. Grief moves, and so does what you want to carry. People sometimes book within days of a loss and later find the design belonged to the very worst week rather than to the person. Nobody here will push you to book faster, and we would rather you took another month and were certain.

Check the dates twice, then once more. Memorial dates are the most emotionally costly detail to get wrong, and grief makes everyone careless. Confirm the format — 03/05 is two different days depending on where you learned to write dates. Where wings sit best

Upper back and shoulder blades. The natural home. The anatomy already suggests where wings would attach, and the flat, low-friction, sun-protected surface is ideal for detail.
Full back. The most ambitious option and the most impressive. A multi-session project.
Chest. Wings spreading across the pectorals, often framing a central element. Sharper to sit near the sternum.
Upper arm and shoulder cap. A single wing wrapping the deltoid works well and is easy to cover.
Forearm. Suits a single vertical wing rather than a pair.
Behind the ear, wrist or ankle. Only for simplified minimal wings. Do not attempt detailed feathering at this scale.

Does it hurt?

Placement decides it, as always. The upper back and shoulder blades are among the more comfortable large areas — fleshy, with relatively few sensitive spots, which is fortunate given that this is where most wings go. The spine itself, the shoulder blade bone and the area near the sternum are sharper.

What is specific here is duration. A full back pair is many hours across multiple sessions, and hours five and six feel different from hour one. That is a reason to plan rather than to worry: eat properly beforehand, stay hydrated, and take the breaks when offered. We pace long sessions deliberately.

Healing and aftercare, with a Gurgaon twist

Keep the initial wrap on for as long as your artist advises, then wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free soap.
Pat dry, never rub. Rubbing a large freshly-shaded area can pull pigment.
Apply a thin layer of the recommended balm. Large areas tempt over-application. Thin is still the word.
Do not pick or scratch. Shaded feather work scabs, and a picked scab leaves a pale patch mid-feather.
No swimming, saunas, gym sweat or soaking for the first two to three weeks after each session.
Get help with the back. You cannot reach your own shoulder blades properly. Arrange for someone to help you wash and moisturise, or you will end up with patchy healing exactly where you cannot see it.

Back placements are naturally well protected from Gurgaon’s sun, which is one of the reasons wings age well there. But a day at a pool or a beach holiday will expose them completely, so once healed use SPF 30 minimum — 50 is better — whenever your back is uncovered. Why the artist matters here

Wings are a symmetry problem. Two wings have to mirror each other across a curved, muscled, moving back — and the human eye is exceptionally good at spotting when a symmetrical thing is slightly off. A few millimetres of difference in feather layout between left and right is immediately visible, even to someone who could not say why it looks wrong.
